Fixed Wire Testing

Fixed Wire Testing is the term used for inspection of your fixed electrical installation. Faulty electrics in a home or business premises are one of the leading causes of fires within a building. As such, it is important to keep on top of all the necessary testing and maintenance required to keep any property as safe as possible. There are certain legal obligations surrounding this, dependent on the type of property you own. For example, landlords must follow strict government guidelines to ensure the maximum safety of their tenants. Business premises have other obligations. Regardless of your situation, especially if you are just worried about electrical safety in your own home, Hexo Services can help. Providing electrical testing including hard wire testing all across the South East region, we will be on hand not only to provide fixed electrical testing of your systems, but also a fixed wiring inspection and will also correct and maintain them at competitive prices.

What is Fixed Wire Testing?

Fixed wire testing involves a full test of all the electrics and electrical systems within a building. It will necessitate testing electrical installations throughout the whole property to uncover any issues and any wear and tear that needs remedial work before it becomes an issue. We check the general health of all the electrical systems in the property. These include:

  • Distribution boards
  • Mains panels
  • Wiring in the walls, floors and ceilings
  • Lighting circuits
  • Sockets and outlets
  • Any other fixed wiring

Fixed wire testing has many other names too such as wire testing, testing electrical installations, electrical wiring testing and fixed electrical testing. The modern term for all these is EICR or Electrical Installation Condition Report. They all mean essentially the same thing and help to ensure your building is kept as safe as possible.

What happens during a fixed wire test?

Fixed wire testing can only be conducted by fully trained and qualified engineers which is why you will need to employ the services of specialists such as Hexo Services. Our technicians will visit your site at a time which is suitable to you to cause minimum disruption and will initially look to identify all of the electrical installations. This is done via a review of past tests (and any reports that were generated from this) and we will also look at the labelling of the circuits in situ. If required, we will need to trace circuits to ascertain their location and only when we are confident we know what we are testing will we commence.

Fixed wiring testing is done in two key ways; firstly, a visual assessment will take place which is of great value. Quite often, there will be noticeable signs of problems such as too making connections in one place, connections which have become loose or even degradation to the wires and systems. Secondly, there will be physical testing of the circuits conducted with tools and electronic meters that are specifically designed to do this. The circuits will need to be disconnected briefly in order for this to happen.

What is the outcome of a fixed wire test?

The desired outcome of a fixed wire test is that those responsible for the building will be alerted to any existing issues and also anything that might become an issue in the near future. These can then be rectified before any serious problems occur.

After the full sequence of electrical testing has taken place, an EICR will be drafted so there is a proper record of the findings. This is an Electrical Installation Condition Report and it details the status of the systems and what needs to be done to make any of it ‘good’.

Fixed wiring testing should be conducted at regular intervals and we at Hexo Services can help with this. There are certain necessary guidelines to follow such as the 5 year electrical test legal requirement. We will help you meet all of the necessary criteria.

What if issues are found during the inspection?

If any issues arise during our inspection, we offer a defect repair and remedial service, to get your business compliant quickly and efficiently once again. Once repair works have been carried out, the entire system will be examined again, to ensure the maintenance has been completed successfully.

Typical fixed wire installation remedial works might include:

  • Replacement distribution boards and circuits
  • Circuit repairs
  • Replacement light fittings
  • Replacement sockets and switches
  • Repairs to damaged cables
  • Installation of RCD protection
  • Earthing and bonding upgrades and installations
  • Circuit breakers and RCBOs
  • Protection around enclosures
  • Loose and damaged accessories

Once your system has been repaired, we will then issue you with an Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC), or a Minor Works Certificate (MW), along with a satisfactory Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR). This is proof that your system is up-to-date, safe and compliant.
